Metabolic Co-factors

Metabolic Co-Factors is a multivitamin and mineral formula designed by Dr. Galland to enhance your body's ability to utilize essential fatty acids (EFAs). It has played a central role in his medical nutrition practice for almost twenty years and is a favorite among his patients. The formula has been refined over the years, as new research findings have come to light.

The key nutrients needed for efficient utilization of EFAs are:

- Zinc. Low zinc levels in blood are quite common in the United States, reflecting the effects of diet, medication, and inflammation. Zinc requirements are increased with exercise, growth and healing of injuries or recovery from surgery. In addition to its effects on EFA metabolism, zinc plays important roles in regulating immunity and brain function.

- Magnesium. Over two-thirds of Americans consumed much less than the RDA for magnesium. Magnesium requirements are increased by stress, exercise and inflammation. In addition to aiding EFA utilization, magnesium is important for the function of nerves and muscles and for bone health.

- Selenium. Selenium supplementation at levels found in Metabolic Co-factors has been demonstrated to decrease the incidence of breast, prostate and colon cancer. Selenium is supplied as selenomethionine, because this type of selenium shows greater transport into the cells of your body than the inorganic selenium used in most supplements.

- Vitamins B6. The effect of this essential nutrient is blocked by a number of environmental toxins, creating a need for supplementation among many individuals. In addition to its enhancement of EFA utilization, vitamin B6 is needed for the transport of zinc and magnesium into your cells.

- Vitamin C. Metabolic Co-Factors contains two forms of vitamin C: the usual water-soluble form (ascorbic acid) and the fat-soluble form (ascorbyl palmitate), because fat-soluble vitamin C has a greater ability to prevent oxidative damage to EFA's.

- Vitamin E. Vitamin E is the most important nutrient for preventing oxidative damage to EFA's in the membranes of your cells. Dietary vitamin E takes many forms, so Metabolic Co-Factors supplies vitamin E as natural mixed tocopherols. Most supplements supply vitamin E in only one form, alpha-tocopherol. Whether synthetic or "natural", supplementation with alpha-tocopherol as the only form of vitamin E actually lowers the levels of the other tocopherols in your blood. Some of these, especially gamma-tocopherol, are more potent anti-oxidants than alpha-tocopherol. All of the negative publicity that vitamin E supplements have received over the past few years is based upon research employing alpha-tocopherol only. The dose of mixed tocopherols in Metabolic Co-factors has been carefully chosen to avoid creating disturbances among other anti-oxidants. The dose used by many high potency multivitamins, 400 IU's per day, may deplete your body's levels of Co-enzyme Q10, an important protector of normal cell function.

Other nutrients found in Metabolic Co-Factors have been carefully chosen for their specific effects:

Vitamin D3, the more active form of vitamin D, is supplied at a dose of 800 IU/day, because deficiency of this vital nutrient is so widespread in North America. Vitamin D not only helps calcium absorption and protects bone, it also regulates immune function and cell growth. Low intake of vitamin D increases your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases and Alzheimer's disease.

Folic acid is supplied at a dose of 800 micrograms per day, because many Americans will not achieve optimum benefits from the more commonly used 400-microgram dose.

Vitamin A is supplied as mixed carotenoids only. Most supplements supply vitamin A either as beta-carotene (the vegetable form) or as retinol (the animal form). A healthy diet should not be supplemented with retinol, unless there is a specific need for it, as determined by a health professional. Higher retinol intake is associated with bone loss. Beta-carotene supplements cause a decrease in the levels of other carotenoids like lycopene and lutein in your blood. These other carotenoids have greater health benefits in prevention of heart disease and cancer than does beta-carotene. Dr. Galland has always cautioned against the use of beta-carotene alone.

The minerals copper, manganese, boron and silicon are included because of their importance for prevention of osteoporosis, which has become epidemic in the United States. Boron also decreases the stress-induced loss of magnesium. Chromium and vanadium are included because of their important role in regulation of blood sugar and prevention of diabetes.

Metabolic Co-Factors contains no iron. Unless you are iron deficient, supplementation with iron may have toxic effects. Iron also interferes with the absorption of other minerals, especially zinc, copper and manganese.
Metabolic Co-Factors contains no calcium, because calcium interferes with absorption of most other minerals, especially at the high levels found in some high-potency supplements. Most people following The Fat Resistance Diet will get all the calcium they need from food. You will only need to add a calcium supplement if you are intolerant of dairy products or have another special and specific need.
